Goal Setting is your personal GPS system that reminds YOU of what YOU want to achieve in YOUR life and how to stay on track on YOUR journey and in YOUR lane.
Writing your goals down on a clip board and revisiting them once or twice a week is a good way to (a) view them frequently and (b) to be able to identify, clarify and adjust them as you proceed.
When setting Goals for Success, I like using the acronym SMART.
SMART GOALS ARE:
Specific: You have to know what you want to achieve. Be clear and concise ~ write it down, don’t just commit it to memory ~ you want to be able to see it. Written Goals that are easy to be seen are forgotten less often. It’s your built in Cheer Leader Team providing you with motivation to keep on keeping on.
Remember to ask yourself these Five questions: What? Where? When? Why? and with Whom?
Measurable: There’s nothing more exciting and encouraging like mapping your progress as you move towards your goals. You can actually look back at where you were, where you are now and what it took to get you there.
Attainable: It is good to set the bar at a height that you know you can reach. Raising the bar prematurely can discourage you and may cause you to loose interest altogether.
Realistic: Be very realistic with your goals. Unrealistic goals do not materialize because you yourself do not believe you can achieve them. Pie In The Sky ideas do not work.
Timely: Set some deadlines for yourself. Do you have a target date in mind? When is it? After you’ve answered the questions make a commitment to yourself, sign it, date it and put it in a place that you visit often to remind you of your commitment to you.
The next time we meet, I’ll share with you some strategies you could implement in your life to help you become the best you can be by managing your time effectively.
